MoneyForward ME alternative for iPhone: who Cashful suits, and who should stay

Updated

Looking for a MoneyForward ME alternative for iPhone? If you are happy to log spending yourself and want a free plan with no ads, no bank login and several currencies, Cashful, a money tracker for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, is worth a look: you add an expense with one spoken sentence or a receipt photo. If what you value is having every bank and card filled in automatically, MoneyForward ME does that and Cashful does not. Below is a fair comparison, as of October 2026, to help you decide.

What MoneyForward ME does well

MoneyForward ME (家計簿マネーフォワード ME) is one of Japan's best-known household budget apps. Its idea is an automatic ledger: you connect your accounts once, and the app builds the budget for you. Credit where it's due:

  • Automatic bank and card sync. It links 2,451 banks, credit cards, e-money services, point programs and brokers (App Store listing, company research as of April 2025). Card spending appears without typing, which is the main reason people use it.
  • Automatic categories and reports. Transactions are categorized for you, with budgets and monthly reports on top.
  • Assets in one view. Bank, brokerage, point and pension accounts sit side by side, so you see your net position, not just spending.
  • Many platforms. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, and in a web browser on Windows or Mac.
  • Huge user base. It holds 4.37 stars from 174,537 ratings in the Japanese App Store and has been updated continuously since 2013.

If automatic sync is what you need, MoneyForward ME is a strong choice, and no manual app, Cashful included, will replace it.

Why people look for a MoneyForward ME alternative

In Japan, people often search for "マネーフォワード 改悪" (roughly "MoneyForward changed for the worse") when they start looking around. That is their wording, not our verdict. Here is what actually changed, with the reasons the company gave:

  • Fewer free links. In December 2022 the free plan went from 10 linked services to 4; linking five or more needs Premium. Money Forward cited rising maintenance and API-linking costs.
  • A higher price. On August 5, 2025 the Standard plan had its first price rise in 12 years. It now costs ¥590 a month or ¥6,490 a year through the App Store, or ¥540 and ¥5,940 by card on the web. The stated reasons were inflation, maintenance and API costs.
  • Ads and limits on the free plan. The free version shows ads and lets you view only the past year of data. Since the service moved to Money Forward Home in November 2024, Premium hides ads but still shows promotions for group services and Olive.
  • Yen only. Amounts in foreign currencies are not supported, which is awkward for travel, overseas income or savings in dollars.
  • Bank access and an account. You need a Money Forward ID to start. Depending on the institution, the app links either through the bank's API, where it never holds your PIN, or by storing your login ID and password encrypted and signing in for you. Some people would rather not hand that over at all.

If two or more of these sound familiar, a simpler money tracker may suit you better. Here is how Cashful compares.

Who should stay with MoneyForward ME

Keep MoneyForward ME if any of these is true for you:

  • You want card and bank spending recorded automatically, without entering anything.
  • You track assets such as brokerage accounts, pensions and points in one place.
  • You use Android or want to check your budget in a web browser.
  • You only need four or fewer linked services, so the free plan still covers you.
  • You share a household budget with your partner through Share Board.

Cashful never connects to a bank, does not track investments and runs only on Apple devices. Switching for any of the reasons above would likely send you back to MoneyForward ME within a month.

Who Cashful suits better

  • You would rather enter spending yourself. Writing each expense down is what makes many people notice where money goes. Cashful makes that fast: say "lunch 900 yen cash" or snap a receipt, and it fills in the amount, category and account for you to check. See how to track expenses by voice on iPhone.
  • You don't want to share bank logins. Cashful never connects to your bank, shows no ads and needs no sign-up. Records live on your devices and in your own iCloud. Here is why a budget app without bank linking is worth it.
  • You want a free plan without ads. The free plan has no time limit: unlimited manual entries, income, expenses and transfers, up to 3 accounts and 2 currencies, iCloud sync, widgets, Siri and the Apple Watch app, plus 10 voice entries and 5 receipt scans to try.
  • You live in more than one currency. Each account keeps its own currency, with your own exchange rates and transfers between accounts, so a dollar account and a yen account sit side by side.
  • You pay with your watch on, or work on a Mac. The free Apple Watch app logs an expense at the register by voice, Digital Crown or keypad, and the same records appear on your Mac with Apple silicon.
  • You want the app in your language. Cashful is available in 13 languages, Japanese included.

One honest note on privacy: when you use voice entry or receipt scanning, the text or photo is sent to Cashful's server to be read by an AI model, and the server does not store it. Your records themselves live on your devices and in your iCloud. If you are still comparing apps in general, start with how to choose a money tracker app for iPhone.

How to switch from MoneyForward ME to Cashful

  1. Install Cashful from the App Store and keep MoneyForward ME for a few weeks while you settle in.
  2. Create the accounts you actually pay from, such as cash, a debit card and savings, each with its currency and today's balance as MoneyForward ME shows it.
  3. Decide what to do with your history. Starting from today's balances is the quickest path. If you have past transactions in a CSV file, Cashful Pro can import CSV, and the 7-day trial gives you time to bring them in. In MoneyForward ME, CSV download is a Premium feature.
  4. Keep only the categories you really use. A few broad ones make the monthly summary easier to read.
  5. For one week, log every expense the moment it happens: say it, snap the receipt or type it. Nothing arrives from the bank, so card payments count too.
  6. Once you are confident, cancel MoneyForward ME Premium wherever you started it, in the App Store or by card on the web.
