How to track expenses by voice on iPhone

Updated

Most budgets die in the gap between paying and writing it down. Voice capture closes that gap: you say one sentence while the card is still in your hand, and the expense is logged. Here is how it works in Cashful, an expense tracker for iPhone, and how to get the most out of it.

Why typing kills budgets

A typed entry is five decisions: open the app, pick the type, type the amount, choose a category, choose an account. Each one is small, but together they are just enough friction to postpone the entry until tonight. Tonight becomes the weekend, and by the end of the month the budget is a guess.

Voice collapses those decisions into one sentence. The effort drops to the time it takes to say what you just did, which is why voice capture tends to survive past the first week, when most trackers are abandoned.

What a voice entry looks like

In Cashful you tap the mic in the middle of the home screen, speak naturally, then tap anywhere on the screen to finish. A few examples that work as-is:

  • "Coffee 4.50, card" — amount 4.50, category Food, account Card.
  • "Groceries 62 euros, cash" — amount, currency, category and the Cash account.
  • "Taxi twelve dollars" — amounts in words are understood too.

The filled-in form appears before anything is saved, so a wrong guess is one tap to fix, not a silent error in your data.

Tips for entries that land right

  • Lead with what, then how much. "Lunch 11.20" is more reliable than a long story before the number.
  • Name the account only when it is not your default. If most spending goes on one card, set it as the default and skip it.
  • Use your own category names. Categories are matched by meaning, so "fuel" finds "Car" if that is where fuel lives in your setup.
  • Mix languages if you do. Cashful's interface and voice input work in 13 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.

Privacy: what is sent where

Speech is turned into text by Apple's speech recognition. That one sentence, together with the names of your categories and accounts, is sent for recognition so the form can be filled in. Nothing else from your records leaves the device, there is no sign-in, and no bank connection is ever involved. Because recognition happens online, voice input needs an internet connection; everything else in Cashful works offline.

Questions

Can I add expenses by voice on iPhone?

Yes. In Cashful you tap the mic, say something like "Coffee 4.50, card" and tap anywhere on the screen. The amount, category and account are filled in and shown to you before saving, so you can correct anything in one tap.

Does voice expense tracking work offline?

Not in Cashful: turning the sentence into a filled-in expense happens online, so voice input needs a connection. Manual entry, history, search and analytics work fully offline.

Is voice input free?

Every new user gets 10 voice entries and 5 receipt scans to try. Manual entry is free and unlimited. Cashful Pro makes voice input and receipt scanning unlimited.
